FCL vs. LCL

The difference between FCL and LCL when shipping freight by sea.

Container being moved at Grangemouth port

Full Container Load (FCL)

FCL (Full Container Load) means that a single container, either 20 or 40ft in size, is completely filled with cargo. This is the standard defined by the ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation).

Less than a Container Load (LCL)

LCL (Less than Container Load) means that the shipment is not enough to fill a standard 20 or 40ft container. Instead, multiple consignees’ cargo is loaded into the container. When the container arrives at the destination port, the goods are separated at a warehouse, typically by an appointed shipping line’s agent and made available for customs clearance and onward travel. LCL is more expensive per unit of freight compared to FCL but it may be a cheaper choice for small shipments.
