Preferential and Non-Preferential Certificates and Documents
International Trade Documents
Rules of Origin, Trade Agreements and Banking Requirements may, at times require further trade documentation.
Certificate of Origin
There are times when your buyer may ask you for a Certificate of Origin (sometimes known as a Non-preferential certificate of origin) in order to comply with customs procedures, free trade agreements or banking procedures. Certificate of Origin’s are issued by a Chamber of Commerce under the authority of the issuing body (British Chambers of Commerce).
The form consists of 12 boxes and a declaration of origin (3 check-boxes). This form seems simple on the outset however this can become challenging to complete as all information entered on the form must be shown on your invoice and/or packing list and, you must decide, based on rules of origin, if your goods are of UK origin or foreign origin.
EUR1 Certificate
An EUR1 certificate (also known as a Preferential Certificate of Origin) is issued by a freight forwarder (such as Kinnes Shipping) who are authorised by HMRC to provide Preferential Certificates. With this certificate, your buyer will be able to claim preferential rates of duty – usually at 0%.
An EUR1 also consists of 12 boxes, much like the Certificate of Origin however, there is no back pink page. To use this service, you simply send a commercial invoice and a packing list to us by email. We will create the EUR1 for you.
Managing certificate or origin, EUR1 and embassy legalised documents can be time consuming and can become costly if Chamber’s reject your application or it is held at port due to an error on the application.
