What’s Changing in CDS?

The UK will launch the Customs Declaration Service for all UK imports on the 30th September 2022. This system replaces the aging CHIEF system and will be the primary customs entry system used by all customs agents in the UK.

As a trader, what do I need to do?

Traders do not need to do a lot as this change mostly affects the way in which entries are submitted to HMRC. However, it is recommended that traders subscribe to CDS using their Government Gateway account.

It is also recommended to set-up a direct debit for your HMRC Deferment Account and authorise your customs agent to use this deferment account to prevent any delays to customs entries later.

If you are a customs client of Kinnes Shipping, please authorise EORI GB268941808000

Why all the fuss in the media about CDS?

HMRC and the media will cater to everyone. Some businesses incur duty and must authorise their customs agent before 30th September and other businesses have customs teams internally that will require expensive training to transition to the new customs system. Time is short however, if you have appointed a customs agent, you’re main task is simply to subscribe to the customs declaration service and authorise your agent to use your deferment account.
