A new route from Asia to Europe will continue it’s operation this August, bringing potential reduced cost, risk and lowering shipping times from places like China, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and the Philipines.
Due to climate change and the continious military activity in the middle east as well around the red sea and Suez Canal, the northern passage is becoming a viable and lucratic option for shipping lines looking for alternative routes to Europe.
Offering less than 20 days sea passage from key origins such as Qingdao, Shanghai, Dalian and Ningbo to Felixstowe, Rotterdam and Antwerp, the journey around the top of the planet will bring goods to Europe faster than both the Suez Canal and China-Europe railway project and best of all – it has the potential to be lower cost. This will be a welcome relief for UK importers who have been feeling the pressure due to continued conflicts resulting in shipping lines avoiding the Suze and opting for lengthy transit times around the Cape of Good Hope.
The main Europe based shipping lines such as Hapag-Lloyd, MSc and Maersk have ruled out using the arctic passage, citing that they lack the expertise and capability for polar navigation – continued use of these three lines after the passage is fully up and running will result in a markedly slower transit time to Europe, as they continue to use the Cape of Good Hope. Leaving your goods on the water for 40-50 days. These three lines have also cited their heavy oil vessels will have a measurable impact on the arctic.
It’s early days still, with very few vessels using the passage however, in August 2026, Sea Legend Shipping Co. will being it’s route from Ningbo to Felixstowe with vessels that have a capacity for 1500-4890 TEU. The first vessel, the Dubai Tower is scheduled to leave Ningbo on 15th August 2026 and arrive in Felixstowe on the 7th September.
